5 Local Foods to Try in Provence/Côte d'Azur

So you're traveling to Provence or Côte d'Azur and you want to try the local food? I spent a week in Nice trying all kinds of food, from your typical French baguettes and croissants to delicious Italian pizza and pasta. I also tried the local cuisine! Here are 5 foods to try when you're in Provence/Côte d'Azur:

Socca

Thanks to southern France, I am OBSESSED with socca. It's a type of flatbread made with chickpea flour, olive oil, water, and pepper. It's typically thin and the edges are crispy! Sometimes there are also caramelized onions on it! You can eat it as a snack or as part of your lunch. There are many restaurants that serve socca, but you can also find it at markets!

Pissaladiére

Similar to pizza, pissaladière is a flatbread with caramelized onions, olives, and anchovies. I do not like olives and anchovies, so I took those off. It was still delicious, though! You'll often find socca and pissaladière being served at the same place, sometimes they will even be served together on an assiette Niçoise, a plate with different local foods.

Pan Bagnat

Pan bagnat is a sandwich version of a salade Niçoise. It is bread with tuna, spinach, hard-boiled egg, red onions, tomatoes, olives, olive oil, and anchovies. Again, I took off the olives and anchovies, but these sandwiches were delicious!! Depending on where you go, mini pan bagnats may also come on the assiette Niçoise.

Rosé

You can find rosé anywhere, but you must try French rosé. A large portion of the wine that's produced in this area is actually rosé. There are a bunch of wineries that you can visit and taste different wines. You can also find a few different options of rosé wines at most restaurants!

Petits Farcis

Petits Farcis is simply stuffed veggies. Think stuffed bell peppers, but instead of only peppers, you can get zucchini, eggplant, or tomatoes. They are also small, hence "petits"! You'll usually find that the vegetables are stuffed with a mixture of sausage and other veggies, like tomatoes and onions.

If you plan on visiting Provence or Côte d'Azur, you must try these these foods! They are all so delicious!
